Dr. Jessica Narum teaches courses in harmony, solfege, and post-tonal analysis. She recently co-facilitated a three-semester Faculty-Student Collaborative course in the area of computational musicology. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she advises music theory thesis projects, organizes activities for the Music Academic Studies Seminars (MASS) and serves as the coordinator for the B.A. Music degrees.
Her research primarily concerns musical meaning after 1900; her dissertation focused on the analysis of musical topics in the work of Arnold Schoenberg. Her most recent scholarly project involves an interdisciplinary approach to topical analysis through data science methods. Narum’s other research interests include performance and analysis, popular music and music theory pedagogy. She has presented her work at regional meetings of the American Musicological Society (Midwest and Southwest chapters) and the South Central Society for Music Theory and at a national meeting of the Society for Music Theory (2019).
Prior to her position at BW, Dr. Narum was a faculty member at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, and Concordia University, St. Paul, MN.
